Windows Software

Light Downloader 1.1.1

Download managers are abundant these days and almost all popular browsers offer basic a download management facility. Most of us don't feel like using something more advanced but if you're downloading huge files frequently or multiple files simultaneously, you might want to consider an alternate to traditional downloading via a browser.

A good alternative that is not just fully-featured but also very lightweight with the system is Light Downloader. This tiny download manager can resume broken downloads from where they were interrupted and accelerate your downloads (up to 6 times) by splitting the files into several parts and downloading them simultaneously.

The interface of Light Downloader is clean and easy to understand. The main window shows a list of downloaded files with additional information like file name, file size, download status, current download speed, number of downloading sections and estimated time to complete.

At the top you can find the main menu and the control buttons such as: create a new download, start / stop download, traffic usage and preference (where you get regular options related to downloads, limits, monitoring, network, proxy servers and so on)

On the left hand side of the program window, downloads are categorized (by extension) as either Music, Other, Software and Video. More to this, there is a filter which allows you to see the completed downloads, in progress and stopped downloads, as well as scheduled downloads. Scheduled downloads means that the program can connect to the Internet at a scheduled time, download the files you want, disconnect, or shut down your computer when it's done.

Quite alike the famous Internet Download Manager, the application once installed adds a watermark on your desktop (which you can move wherever you want), providing drag-and-drop of URLs for easy quick downloading.

Last but not least, Light Downloader offers browser integration for Firefox and Internet Explorer and in case you need to, you can also add URLs manually.

Pluses: Clean interface; lightweight; drag and drop support; download acceleration;

Drawbacks / flaws:

In conclusion: If you want to boost your download speed for free and make sure your files will be certainly downloaded, this utility is definitely worth a try.
